Unveiling the Pioneering History of Aqueous Extraction from Vanuatu
The story behind modern Instant Kava begins in Vanuatu in the early 2000s, at a time when the international kava industry was facing one of its biggest challenges.
James Armitage, working alongside Cameron McLeod, was closely involved in the Vanuatu kava industry as European restrictions on certain kava products severely disrupted exports and damaged confidence in the category.
A major concern at the time centred on how some kava extracts had been produced. Certain products were manufactured using extraction methods and plant material that did not reflect the traditional way kava had been consumed in the Pacific for generations.
That created an important question: could kava be processed in a way that stayed closer to traditional preparation while also making it convenient, consistent and suitable for modern consumers?
That question helped drive the development of an aqueous, or water-based, approach to Instant Kava production. Instead of relying on alcohol or chemical extraction, the process was built around the same fundamental principle as traditional kava preparation: extracting kava with water.
It was an important step in the evolution of Instant Kava and one that continues to influence the way quality instant products are produced today.
That spirit of innovation did not stop with Instant Kava.
Armitage and his team continued experimenting with new ways to make kava easier to use in modern products, eventually developing a concentrated kava resin.
That resin opened the door to entirely new applications for kava, including the development of Kava Cola, a carbonated drink designed to combine the familiar experience of a soft drink with the distinctive effects of kava.
At the time, it was a very different way of thinking about kava. Instead of limiting it to the traditional bowl, the focus shifted towards how kava could be adapted into convenient, ready-to-drink formats while still retaining the character that made the plant unique.
It was another important step in showing just how versatile kava could become.
The next chapter in the story of Instant Kava has been about taking that original aqueous philosophy and asking a new question: how much further can the process be refined using modern production technology?
The foundation remains the same. Kava is still extracted using water, staying true to the basic principle behind traditional preparation rather than relying on alcohol or chemical solvents.
What has changed is the technology available around that process.
Modern processing equipment now allows far greater control over extraction, separation, concentration and drying than was available when aqueous Instant Kava was first developed in the islands. That has created an opportunity to preserve what was right about the original method while improving consistency, efficiency and the quality of the finished powder.
This thinking sits behind the development of Waka Premium Instant Kava.
